Nvidia Launches Omniverse Cloud Services in 100 Countries to Power Metaverse

Nvidia today announced its first software and infrastructure-as-a-service offering — Nvidia Omniverse Cloud — a suite of cloud services for artists, developers and business teams to design, publish, operate and experience metaverse apps anywhere.

The technology leverages the cloud to harness the power of data centers to deploy Omniverse tools wherever users are. More than 700 companies and 200,000 people now use Omniverse.

With Omniverse Cloud, individuals and teams can experience the ability to design and collaborate on 3D workflows with one click without the need for local computing power. Omniverse Cloud uses Nvidia’s cloud gaming solution, GeForce Now, which has a global graphics delivery network.

“The next evolution of the Internet called metaverse will be extended to 3D,” Richard Kerris, vice president of Omniverse at Nvidia, said at a news conference. “To understand what the impact will be, the traditional Internet as we know it today connects websites that are described in HTML and viewed through a browser. The metaverse will be the evolution of this internet connecting 3D virtual worlds using the USD, or universal scene description.

He added: “Think of it as the HTML of 3D that can be viewed in real time on a virtual simulation engine. This means that you will be able to interact with 3D objects, to experience that sort of thing virtually. That doesn’t mean everyone will be like Ready Player One, with headsets and all. It’s just a mechanism for experiencing things. That means any device you own today that interacts with the internet will be able to interact with 3D, and that will be a game changer.

Robotics can train, simulate, test and deploy AI-enabled intelligent machines with increased scalability and accessibility. Autonomous vehicle engineers can generate data from physical sensors and simulate traffic scenarios to test different road and weather conditions for safe deployment of autonomous driving.

Omniverse Cloud is based on the open standard Universal Scene Description (USD) for interoperable 3D assets.

“The Metaverse, the 3D Internet, connects 3D virtual worlds described in USD and visualized through a simulation engine,” Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said in a statement. “With Omniverse in the cloud, we can connect teams around the world to design, build and operate virtual worlds and digital twins.”

Early supporters of Omniverse Cloud include RIMAC Group, WPP, and Siemens. WPP happens to be the largest marketing services organization in the world and fully embraces Omniverse Cloud.

WPP is the first to launch automotive marketing services on Omniverse Cloud to deliver advanced and personalized 3D content and experiences to automotive brands.

Developers, creators, and companies around the world are using Nvidia Omniverse to create virtual worlds and push the boundaries of the metaverse. Based on Universal Scene Description (USD), originally created by Pixar – a common and extensible language for virtual worlds – Omniverse is a scalable computing platform for real-life 3D simulation workflows that developers from global industries use to create the 3D Internet.

At the latest GTC keynote, Nvidia announced the largest new feature release for Omniverse to date, featuring Omniverse Cloud managed services and container deployments, new developer toolkits, and an open developer release portal.

With these latest releases and features, developers can build, extend, and connect 3D tools and rigs to the Omniverse ecosystem with greater ease than ever before.

Nvidia’s first SaaS offering, Omniverse Cloud, is infrastructure as a service that connects Omniverse applications running in the cloud, on-premises, or on edge devices. Omniverse App Streaming allows users to create and collaborate on any device, access and edit shared virtual worlds with Omniverse Nucleus Cloud, and scale 3D cloud workloads with Omniverse Farm.

Omniverse Cloud runs on the Omniverse Cloud computer on a planetary scale. It is powered by Nvidia OVX systems for graphically rich virtual world simulation, Nvidia HGX for advanced AI workloads.

“Through GeForce Now, we have built a global GDN, a graphical delivery network,” said Nvidia CEO Huang in GTC’s keynote today.

Huang believes that the largest industries — retail, consumer and luxury goods, supply chain, logistics, etc. — will use Omniverse to connect their teams, visualize their data reliably, generate synthetic data to train AI models, and simulate twins.

“Omniverse is a new computing platform and requires a new computing system,” Huang said.

The fundamentals include RTX graphics, OVX servers and Nvidia GPUs, he said.

Kerris said many metaverse apps are already out there and growing at an unprecedented rate. Fashion designers, furniture makers and retailers offer virtual 3D products that you can try out with augmented reality.

Telecom operators are creating digital twins of their radio networks to optimize radio tower placement, thanks to work by Heavy.AI.

“By using Omniverse, they can save billions of dollars in the way they deploy 5G networks,” Kerris said.

And companies like Siemens and BMW are creating digital twins of warehouses and factories to optimize their logistics.

“And we’re building a digital twin of the Earth to predict the climate for decades to come,” Kerris said. “Omniverse is unlike anything built before. It is a platform for building and operating metaverse applications on a large-scale, real-time 3D database, a computing platform that allows designers and 3D teams to better connect and build existing 3D pipelines that use simulations of virtual worlds.

Nvidia has created its own Omniverse apps, such as Isaac Sim for testing robots, Omniverse Replicator for generating synthetic data, and Drive for testing autonomous vehicles. And other applications are emerging. Lowes uses Magic Leap 2 augmented reality to help warehouse workers work more efficiently by seeing visual cues in the warehouse while wearing the Magic Leap 2 AR glasses.

“Lowe’s now uses Omniverse as its platform to design, build and operate its stores’ digital twins to optimize operations and enhance the shopping experience,” Kerris said. “Omniverse offers physically accurate digital twins and multiple ways to collaborate, both on a workstation and on an Omniverse-connected Magic Leap 2 AR headset. Lowe’s enhances its employees’ experience by giving them superpowers.

Omniverse is powered by a new Nvidia OVX platform with new GPUs announced today. Nvidia has 150 partners for Omniverse. Deutsche Bahn, the world’s second largest transportation company and operator of Germany’s national railways, uses Omniverse to build and operate digital twins of more than 5,700 stations and 33,000 kilometers of track to optimize utilization capacity, efficiency and safety.

“Deutsche Bahn plans to increase rail capacity and efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint without building new tracks,” Kerris said.
