The most interesting thing about these figures is that they come to the crown school where the students were not only prepared for such exams, but where they were confronted with intellectual or artistic experiences that are not on the program at all. “We help them to become citizens. We are talking about emancipation and citizenship here. We are convinced that the school can still say that in the ear of young people,” emphasizes Bertrand Gaufryau, director for five years of this small private institution of Catholic education, which trains 245 students, from the fourth to the BTS, and some pupils .
This 50-year-old from Talence (Gironde) received us in the spring in his office, on the walls of which works of art, front pages of “Charlie Hebdo” and an original manuscript of the resistance poem “La Rose et le Réséda”. , by Louis Aragon. Not surprising for this grandson of a “Communist boss” who says he likes “positive offense” as long as it’s “in the name of the common good”. Under his leadership, hazpandar high school has developed several projects and initiatives to go off the beaten track. “It’s mainly the meeting with a team,” slips the one who went through national education and ran four other branches in New Aquitaine before arriving in Hasparren.
It asks questions
“As in all human communities, he continues, we are all different, we can have differences of opinion, but in general I like the best of agricultural education here and now. You have to love the people, the area, the culture, the history of the area. And here everything is different, there is an anchor, an identity, and it is not an identity that limits: it is an identity that enriches. The school breathes with the territory. Bertrand Gaufryau recalls that among the missions entrusted to an institution such as his, the founding texts of “animating the territory” include: “It is a unifying mission and we try all possible areas within this mission. »
The director says he likes “positive violations”, as long as it is “in the name of the public interest”.
Such discourse would be hollow if it did not translate into concrete achievements. Most striking is the action that was carried out with Zigor in the past school year. This Protean artist who lives in Biarritz and at the same time a sculptor, draftsman, painter and poet, about whom we have already had the opportunity to speak in the Mag, came to meet the students. Jean-Pierre Larrart, professor of socio-cultural education in his last year before retirement, enjoyed the meeting. “Zigor says that he is not figurative or abstract, but non-figurative. Those questions, that, already! All classes were involved in this project, from the fourth to the BTS. They all took a notebook, a brush. And Zigor asked them to learn to look. He told them that if you know how to look, you can draw. I’ve tried everything, contact lenses, glasses, but it doesn’t work! ‘ laughs the teacher.
But if the artist could do nothing to bring to light the hidden talents of the teacher, on the other hand, he touched the hearts of the young people, some of whom had difficult life paths and came here when they had problems with general education . Many have found for him the opportunity to confront an artistic activity for the first time. “Some students have revealed themselves completely,” says Jean-Pierre Larrart, admiring the work of his classes. For a “poetic library” project with Zigor, he spent a day with the high school students collecting 100 linear meters of wood: “They live it too: a project never goes as planned! It’s great ! »
Highlight and highlight of the “Zigor project”, a day of meeting, last May saw the establishment received from the surrounding world for an exhibition of the notebooks and works of the pupils, the intervention of students of the conservatory and a txalaparta- concert , a Basque percussion instrument, with about thirty musicians, all in the presence of Zigor. Who had already spontaneously drawn an original work on a wall of the school at the beginning of the year. This was not the first operation of its kind at Armand-David: a year earlier, abstract art had been worked on with Yahne Le Toumelin, an artist based in the Dordogne and incidentally mother of the famous Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, one of whom this A major exhibition will take place in Biarritz in the autumn.
And other projects are in progress or are coming. Let us en masse quote a reflection on the place of plants in spaceflight, in the company of Jacques Arnould, ethical expert at Cnes (National Center for Space Studies), or even workshops with renowned intellectuals such as the philosopher Gabrielle Halpern, the journalist and writer Éric Fottorino , climatologist Jean Jouzel… Work is also underway on the Maison des adolescents in Bayonne and a clinic in Marseille, under the sponsorship of psychiatrist Marcel Rufo, so that high school and Hasparren students specializing in landscape architecture can imagine a garden ” what a therapeutic aid is in a care process”.
