It will be school time again on Thursday 1 September. This year, new features have been added to the school curricula, with the desire to sports practice “a priority” for the government.
In primary schools, the great novelty for this start of the school year is the generalization across the territory of 30 minutes of physical activity per day, after two years of experimentation.
Depending on their available structures, institutions are free to choose the activities offered to students. This measure aims “Fighting physical inactivity and obesity in children and adolescents. Tested by 7,000 schools since September 2020, it is part of the goals launched by the government in the run-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024”, indicates the site of the French administration.
The measure does not convince Marvin Deschamps, who has been a substitute in Villefranche-sur-Saône (Rhône) for nine years. “It is clear that children do not get enough exercise and sports, especially at school. But this measure is not the solution, says the teacher. It would have been necessary to first reinforce what already exists, in other words the 3 hours of sport per week and ensure that all schools can adhere to this.
Above all, we will not be given more resources to implement this measure.Marvin Deschamps, substitute teacher in Villefranche-sur-Saône

Above all, there are still questions that remain unanswered. Are these mandatory 30 minutes added to the school time? In this case, which topics are trimmed to free up time when the program is already complicated to keep? On August 29, three days before the start of the school year, Marvin Deschamps was still waiting for details. “We don’t know yet how we are going to organize ourselves”, he slips.

In the context of the Paris Olympic Games, “National Education has great ambition for the development of sports practice among young people”, recalls once again the Ministry of Education and Youth Affairs. The latter thus reiterates the importance of devices “essential knowledge”, such as the “know how to swim” and “know how to ride a bike” programs. The ministry also wants “developing physical education and sports practice for young people with disabilities” and wear a “special attention to the accessibility of sports equipment”, without giving more details.
Following the same model as primary school, the government has decided to start an experiment with two hours of extra physical and sporting activity at the university. settings “Volunteers are invited to set up, on an experimental basis, an organization of timetables that will allow all or part of their students to participate in two hours of sports activities during extracurricular time, in collaboration with sports clubs or associations”.
The experiment will be carried out from the return of the October holidays, from Monday 7 November, in nearly 140 colleges for the 2022-2023 school year. “List is completed”, the Ministry of National Education clarified to franceinfo: sport. Again, the measure is not unanimous. “We share the observation that there is a need for more physical activity among young people. But this solution is not the right one, explains Benoit Hubert, general secretary of Snep-FSU, the majority union of gym teachers. Staying in a voluntary practice, at an extracurricular time, will not encourage them to practice more.
Although many teachers and institutions did not become aware of this experimental measure until August 26, the ministry assured franceinfo:sport that this project had been announced during the back-to-school press conference of the Minister of National Education and Youth, Pap Ndiaye. “a little before the holidays” summer before the new 2022-2023 is integrated. “The setup of the experiment is intended to be flexible, adapted to the environment of the establishment” give control.
