It’s a return to school with much fanfare, for 189 little students from Lille-Moulins district : Thursday 1er Septemberit is an establishment brand new they will integrate, in the heart of an atypical urban environment. In reality, Ariane Capon SchoolNamed in honor of the woman who was a teaching assistant under Pierre Mauroy (from 1983 to 2001, then to 2008), it revolves around an imposing pylon supporting the metro line, boulevard de Belfort.
The four floors offer an unobstructed view of the southern part of Lille, especially because the building was designed “at children’s height”.
A “totally redesigned” neighborhood
But in addition to the spectacle that will take place outside the large windows, the interior of the 16 classrooms remains particularly interesting. The inauguration, Wednesday 30 August, in the presence of the Mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, the director of the school, Nicolas Rousseau, and the parents of future pupils, focused on making the rounds of innovative equipment. For example, the removable partitions, which can be easily pulled down to divide the room into two or four parts, to optimize the conditions for group learning.
The sports field is located at 5e and last level (on the 4th floor)… in the open air. The children play sports above it, above the surrounding roofs and the metro. The panoramic view makes it possible to realize the magnitude of the work of the architects for this project that took 6 years to – literally – get out of the ground. It was the future director, Nicolas Rousseau, who worked to realize the arrival of the structure, more than necessary in the sector, according to Martine Aubry.
We really needed a school here, because in Moulins it started to overflow. New homes have been built throughout the years. This district was wasteland, great avenues. We designed it from scratch.
A construction for 12 million euros
The team of 7 teachers will welcome a young mixed audience at the beginning of the school year, “from all social categories, from all cultures”, the mayor specifies. Children who left the kindergarten cycle could go directly to the Capon school, while children of other levels could leave the school where they started their cycle at the request of the parents. Of the 16 classes, 8 classes will be occupied at the start of the school year.
Cost of the operation: about 12 million euros, shared between the city (7.5 M €), the state (3.6 M €) and the MEL (900.000 €).
In the courtyard, play areas and a “peaceful” space, for softer and quieter games, but also a forum, where teachers and students can discuss and debate. Parents have a multipurpose room available for meetings.
Something to tempt, two days before D-Day, Hamid and Wassim, both students in CE2. They took advantage of the inauguration to test the playground equipment. If one likes “the tunnel, where you have to go on all fours”, the other sees himself learning all his lessons “on the big ball”, which serves as a seat, seen in his classroom. Provided the enthusiasm continues.
