Fake Roblox events are a big problem, says YouTuber

Fake Roblox events can be a big problem on the sandbox gaming platform, according to Roblox YouTuber SharkBlox. These events seem legit at first, but their developers have come up with clever solutions to trick users into spending Robux on avatar items in the experience – even if the items don’t actually exist.

In a video posted on Aug. 24 titled “Fake roblox events are becoming a big problem…”, the content creator explored a Complaint from Twitter user that they bought a fake item during an event on the platform.

The now-deleted Event Experience in question was disguised as the Chainsmokers Roblox Experience. Events like this are possible as Roblox recently hosted concerts for several musicians including George Ezra, Twenty One Pilots and rapper Denzel Curry at an event called Guacathon.

The YouTuber entered the fake event experience to show how gamers can be tricked into buying items they believe are real. In the video, SharkBlox notes that the game had over 1,100 active players at the time of recording, illustrating the potential depth of the problem.

SharkBlox then purchases an item that appears to be an actual prop, but is in fact a game pass, meaning the player will not receive the item purchased. Upon further investigation, the YouTuber realizes that the transaction documentation is tied to an experience called Untitled Game that hosts all game passes in the fake event experience.

SharkBlox says they reported the fake event multiple times and asked Roblox to remove it, but still had access to it to make the video. The YouTuber also noted that the lack of clarity about experience purchases can be a problem as the scammers behind the event can easily make it look like the player is buying a legit item. Roblox could benefit from distinguishing gamepass purchases from item purchases to help people notice when they’re not buying actual avatar items, they suggest.

SharkBlox notes that this style of event scam is relatively new, but shares that they have seen other similar structured events in the past. There is currently no obvious way to tell the difference between a real Roblox sanctioned event experience and a fake one designed to trick people into spending Robux. While there are signs that these games may not be what they seem, a player should know what to look for when judging whether an event is real.

Roblox has some moderation practices in place to prevent users from creating experiences designed solely to scam players, yet content that looks legit at first can still slip through the filtering.

While the metaverse should be a place for everyone, it’s worth considering whether there should be an authentication system and associated badge for Roblox experiences from legit companies and brands, although that could affect the visibility of not. -verified events. As the metaverse continues to grow, developers will likely continue to do more copycats and other fake events to trick people into buying fake items.
