What is an eco school?

In the era of ecological transition, raising awareness of sustainable development is one of the main goals of public and education policy. Indeed, if the school’s mission is to educate the citizens and actors of tomorrow, it is about an introduction to ecological transition, climate change and preserving our planet. The website of the National Education also reads: “The National Education is fully committed to the fight against climate change and biodiversity. For example, students are called upon to be important players in ecological transition, and schools and institutions as example places for environmental protection”.

There are also many official environmental modules such as: E3D labeling (school in a sustainable development approach) that meets the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030 (gender equality, reduced inequality, responsible consumption and production, etc.). In this approach, the school develops joint educational actions with building management and maintenance actions (water and energy saving, renovation of buildings, revegetation of schoolyards, etc.) by integrating the pupils.

In the context of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), eco-schools therefore emerged. Developed in France in 2005 by the Terragir association, this sustainable development label also supports primary, college and secondary schools to adopt sustainable development, also supported by the Ministry of National Education. All actors of a school design, such as pupils, teachers, management, administrative staff, but also communities, associations and parents of pupils, participate in this ecological effort.

For example, schools that want to receive the label work around one of the 8 major themes of the project:

  • food
  • the biodiversity
  • Waste
  • The water
  • energy
  • Health
  • solidarity
  • The climate

In France, 4100 schools have been awarded the Eco-Ecole label since its appearance in 2005. To do this, at the end of each school year, schools can submit their application for labeling according to specific specifications characterized in particular by the application of the methodology according to the eight themes proposed, the participation of the pupils and the capacity of the institution to promote her project outside of school. Involvement is decisive to achieve the label! Also, the implementation of a system with four levels: bronze, silver, gold, platinum since the start of the school year in September 2021 aims to assess the progress margin of the projects carried out by the site during the school year.

Why enroll my child in an eco-school?

Education for sustainable development is not new. Today many schools perform a lot from kindergarten environmental awareness projects such as waste recycling with the color scheme (yellow trash can, green trash), wasted water when it’s time to wash your hands, etc. But if sustainable development education is part of school curricula, not all lessons necessarily apply it, or at least in a concise way. However, if the ecological dimension is important to you in your child’s education, an eco-school guarantees the awareness of ecology during the student’s school year by promoting in-depth reflection on environmental issues during play and on creativity. After all, our children are the future of our planet, it may seem important to you that they know the challenges of preserving it!
