St Julien-sur-Dheune welcomes the canal school and its innovative methods!

This is a novelty in the territory of the community that materializes with the opening of the Canal School in September next year. Located on the site of the former public school of the municipality of St Julien-sur-Dheune, the school will contain a single classroom for multiple ages and will use alternative pedagogy, all in a wooded setting, with easy access. green space and a paved garden.

About 5 years ago the public school of St Julien-sur-Dheune closed its doors /

The associative structure “the school on the canal” was created in 2021. It was born from an idea, a project that took 4 years to germinate.

Parents met, took the time to get to know each other, to see if they had the same values before deciding to work together on the project of an alternative school.

The project should have started earlier, but the Covid decided otherwise.

And it has been since May 2021 that the founding parents of the association have returned to work to develop and realize their project.

The association’s office is made up of Cécile Cervantes, president, Laetitia Durix, treasurer and Marie-Océane Rimoux, secretary.

The Canal School is inspired by Montessori pedagogy with a multi-age classroom focused on developing experimentation and know-how.

The common thread is the link with nature. The child learns through play, through desire, through the pleasure of doing, because, according to the members of the association, it has innate capacities to learn.

The canal school wants to create an environment in which children can develop their natural abilities.

L’école du canal is a small associative school on a human scale that guides the students in a personal way at their own pace and according to their needs.

In order to be able to finance the educational material, the association started with joint financing. 59 donors donated € 5,345.

For those who have not had the opportunity to support the project, it is always possible to make a financial donation at: / 1

Already a dozen registered!

This new school therefore has a private association status outside the contract. It cannot therefore receive state aid. However, it has the same obligations as public schools.

From the beginning of the school year, a teacher teaches children of different levels.

The school’s educational concept is based on:

  • multiple ages, which is atypical compared to national education,
  • respect the rhythm of the child,
  • the connection with nature. The kids will be outside most of the time and learning outside.
  • Benevolence and the development of cooperatives, living together.

It is not one specific method that will be used, but several, depending on the needs of each child:

  • Montessori
  • Freinet
  • pedagogy by nature,
  • ascending descending.

Indeed, the president and secretary of the association explain: “The children are already arriving with their characters, their colours. Project pedagogy will be the common thread. †

And to also recall the regulatory framework in which the school operates: “The school has a duty to achieve common ground learning. †

Today, the parents interested in the school are parents who adhere to the proposed values. The children who are cared for are in kindergarten (small department, medium and large department) up to and including CP.

After that, the school opens an additional level up to the CM2 equivalent every year.

The school is financed by the enrollment of the children, or 220 € per month for 12 months. If several children of the same brother or sister are registered, the price will be reduced.

The children are supervised by an educational team consisting of two teachers and a civil service.

The town hall of St Julien-sur-Dheune supports this alternative project and makes the property available free of charge. The operating costs of the building are borne by the association.

Finally, the association will present various collective projects in the coming weeks.

Tuesday 19 July: cleaning day

Friday 29 July: painting day for recovered tables and chairs

Thursday, August 4: DIY day with making a composter, garden boxes, etc.

It is still possible to support the association through material donations:

  • alternative books and teaching methods (Alphas, Singapore method etc.) or intended for a specific audience (dyslexia, dyscalculia etc.), thematic books (science, nature, geography etc.)
