WowWee introduces a new line of toys to its portfolio. The My Avastars line of toys grew out of kids using avatars to explore, create and express themselves in the metaverse. In fact, the metaverse is so deeply entrenched in My Avastar’s DNA that WowWee has teamed up with Gamefam. Toy maker and publisher Roblox creates a doll that enables seamless interactive play in the physical and digital world.

The launch of My Avastars starts with three unique dolls. Each doll is dressed in an iconic fashion-forward outfit. On top of that you also get a mystery bonus outfit and reusable sticker sheets. Everything combines in over 100 possible unique looks.

“As the Roblox universe continues to grow, we are focused on building the next generation of successful franchises that emerged from the metaverse,” Gamefam boss Joe Ferencz said in a statement to GamesBeat. “My Avastars is the first time a Roblox toy and game have been developed simultaneously, providing players with an immersive experience in both the real world and the metaverse.”

So that’s the physical side, but how does Roblox fit in?

Each of the dolls comes with an individual code to unlock in the new My Avastars: RP game in Roblox. The role-playing game won’t launch until July, but lets kids bring their dolls to life online. Doll owners can use the codes to unlock new fashions, hairstyles and facial features.

“One of the unique things about My Avastars is the aesthetic of the doll itself,” says Andrew Yanofsky of WowWee. “Traditionally, fashion dolls are molded to perfection. By comparison, My Avastars’ blocky shape, flat surfaces, and paste-and-repeat sticker game are all designed to spark kids’ creativity by letting them swap and rearrange their dolls just like they do their avatars. .

The entire project will be owned by the community. WowWee and Gamefam are launching a Discord server so fans can have a two-way conversation with My Avastars. Their voices will have a real impact on the evolution of My Avastars, both physically and in-game.

So the question is…

What I had to think about was whether or not it counted as Toys to Life. These dolls are real toys, but they don’t have wireless chips. They don’t require any special hardware to interact with a game.

I think it might be better toys than the real Toys to Life toys. Skylanders, Starlink ships, and even Amiibos are all more figurines or figurines than anything else. My Avastars are dolls that you can just sit and play with.

Or maybe it doesn’t count as a Toys to Life thing. Maybe it’s not necessary. Might work great as a set of fun dolls for kids with a play pairing bonus.
