The Aubigny School of Music has been preparing the opera Carmencita for months, which she will perform from Friday to Sunday.

It is a major artistic project that finally sees the light of day. The Music School Aubigny-sur-Nère launched in September 2020 the preparation of a show linked to the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet.

Covid mandated, the structure had to postpone any possibility of public representation for a year. But in the end she hits the target. The Music School has programmed three shows, from Friday 24 June to Sunday 26 June, in the monastery of the Augustinians.

The opera includes students from the lyrical singing class launched in September 2020, their choral counterparts and student musicians† And it was not easy to coordinate everything: “There are thirty-five of us, but there should have been more,” says Carole Rebillat, director of the Music School. For months we couldn’t rehearse as a group due to health reasons, but only as a duo, trio… And then some couldn’t come because they didn’t have a health card. They could do video rehearsals, but singing is complicated. †

The past few months have been more favorable for the implementation of the project. The participants were able to meet regularly and will be in residence all week, in the convent of the Augustinians, to complete their artistic creation.

This is not the first time that the Aubigny Music School has embarked on such a project, having already presented the operetta La Belle de Cadix in 2018. It is Zélie Lepot, singing teacher within the structure, who suggested this idea: “Two years ago one of the students sang the song of the Toreador and that gave me the idea to do Carmen, even though it is an opera I have already was thinking about,” explains Zélie Lepot.

And then Carmen became… Carmencita. “We named the show that way because it’s not Bizet’s entire opera, but it is a shortened version which is 2h30 . takes, says Carole Rebillat. We cut passages, otherwise it would have become too long. †

Two hundred seats at each performance

Musical direction and staging is provided by Zélie Lepot† Pianist Xavier-Charles Catta will also be present at this opera. Carole Rebillat will play the part of Carmen. The show will mix music, song and comedy with a humorous dose.

The three performances are presented in the green space of the monastery. The school received the support of the municipality and certain associations to set up the logistics part of the event. Two hundred chairs will be set up for each of these three meetings.

Carole Rebillat is confident in the presence of the sun this weekend. In case of bad weather, the shows will be moved to the Salle de la Forge† The courtyard of the ponds, which was initially the fallback solution, will eventually be unavailable for these three days.
