Don’t let your old computers go to waste.

Most important points:

  • unMineable is a popular software that uses your PC’s GPU and CPU to mine cryptocurrencies.
  • How much your computer can mine depends on your current GPU and hashrate.
  • Profitability depends on your setup, electricity costs and cryptocurrency price.

Crypto mining has become more difficult, but there are still opportunities to use an old desktop or laptop computer to mine crypto, such as Shiba Inu. Created in 2020, it is an Etherum-based alternative to Dogecoin (DOGE), the meme coin made popular by Elon Musk.

After its launch, the SHIB coin was among the largest cryptos in the world in October 2021. Shib was appreciated by almost 49,000,000% in 2021. If you only bought $2.05 SHIB on January 1, 2022, you’d be a millionaire by the end of the year!

Shiba Inu, like most cryptocurrencies, has been beaten this year, but is still up more than 16,000,000% since early 2021. Although Bitcoin mining now requires large warehouses with powerful ripping methods, you can still use the processing power of your PC. Computer CPU or GPU to generate smaller cryptos like Shiba Inu.

Get a cryptocurrency wallet address

The first step is to set up a crypto wallet. Crypto wallets don’t actually store crypto. They keep your private key – password that gives you access to your cryptocurrency – safe and accessible. The crypto you own is on the blockchain and your key is proof that you own your crypto and allow you to transact.

It is important that you do not lose your wallet or else you will lose full access to your crypto. Your wallet can be a USB stick or software such as Coinbase or To start mining SHIB, you will need a crypto wallet to collect your rewards once you hit the payout threshold.

unMineable is a well-known crypto mining software. It has an easy to understand user interface for novice miners. The program allows you to mine certain coins that normally cannot be mined with GPUs such as Shiba Inu, Aave, Cardano, Digibyte, Dogecoin, etc.

To start

You can download the program to your PC and it is free to use. Currently there is no iOS version. It has standard mining fees between 0.75% and 1% and your computer must be on for the program to work. Once you download the program, it will detect your computer’s hardware.

You then choose the coin you want to mine and enter your wallet address. A window will appear with your balance, the crypto you are mining and your current hashrate. How much your computer will mine, your current hashrate, depends on your GPU.

Is it worth it?

After learning this, I downloaded the program to my current laptop to test it. I had to disable my antivirus on my computer to download and run unMineable. I found the website a little hard to understand so I watched YouTube videos to help me complete the setup.

My laptop can mine at 45 mega hashes per second (MH/s). Hash rates basically measure the computing power to mine crypto and measure the number of calculations per second, which can reach into the trillions. In comparison, the best bitcoin miner has a hashrate of 10 terahashes per second (TH/s), which is about 200,000 times more powerful than my laptop. I tested the program on my old laptop and was only able to mine about 400 kilohashes per second (kH/s).

Based on current rates, I can extract about 39,800 Shiba Inus per day or 1.2 million per month. My laptop should work 24/7. This works out to $0.48 per day or $14 per month. When Shiba Inu was at its peak in October 2021, it would have been about 7 times that, or $100 a month. If you take into account my power consumption of 105 watts, the cost per kWh of $0.25 and the pool fee of 1%, the profit drops to $0.43 per month, or $5.27 per year.

That doesn’t seem like much considering how worn out my laptop is and how much electricity I use. However, if you live in an area where electricity is cheaper and you think SHIB will continue to grow in popularity, it might be worth it. For now, unMineable seems safe to mine crypto, but it is important to be aware of the market. Utilities prices have risen due to world events and cryptocurrencies have lost value across the board. The crypto is still quite volatile and the value of your return is much less unpredictable, especially with smaller coins such as SHIB.
