What will be the new professions of the metavers?

Rarely have we seen a term become so important in such a short time: the metaverse is on everyone’s lips, in all marketing briefs or pitches from startups, and even invites in the speeches of the candidates of the last presidential election. , such as Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen. A major marketing trend and fundamental revolution in designing the future of the web, the “metaverse” arouses curiosity, enthusiasm or skepticism. But despite those clamoring for the buzz, all the ingredients seem to be coming together to make the metaverse a reality, starting with use and investment, creating many jobs, many of which have yet to be invented. Let’s take a look at these fields of the future with Ridouan Abagri, co-founder and principal of Digital College, and his new school, Metaverse College.

The metaverse, the new digital frontier?

Every day, a Frenchman spends an average of 8 hours a day in front of a screen connected to the Internet, to have fun watching series or video games, to chat with friends, family or complete strangers, but also to shop or work. † The use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets – concepts increasingly confused under the term mixed reality (XR) or extended – will evolve as supply increases and prices fall. HTC, Sony, Samsung, Oculus (Meta) and soon Apple… All these companies offer headsets, most of which are cheaper than a good mid-range smartphone.

On the investment side, Meta said it has already spent $10 billion developing its immersive Horizon Word platform, which has already attracted 300,000 users since its launch in late 2021. A player like Epic Games, the studio behind the game Fortnite and the graphics engine Unreal Engine, has already raised more than $3 billion, including two from Sony and one from Lego, to develop its own platform with these players. Finally, other players are betting on decentralization as the foundation of the immersive web, and see blockchain technology as the way to make platforms interoperable. They are part of the development of Web3, unlike the giants of Web2 which are GAFAM. In this economy, value is exchanged using cryptoassets such as cryptocurrencies or NFTs.

“In recent years there has been the rise of digital, social networks and the sharing economy. We are now at the dawn of Web3 and the metaverse », added Ridouan Abagri, co-founder and general manager of the Digital College and of the Metaverse College, which will open its doors at the beginning of the 2022 academic year, based on the determination that Meta promises the creation of 10,000 jobs in Europe for its metaverse activity in the coming years. He cites a study by Pôle Emploi and adds: “85% of the jobs that will be filled in 2030 do not yet exist. It is therefore quite difficult to anticipate these developments. Nevertheless, some of these professions of the future are already in demand among the actors who are currently building the metaverse, starting with Meta, indicating to us which skills and which tools in this sector must be mastered with perpetual conviction, but which, in the future, will be as indispensable as the web or social networks are today. †

What will be the future professions of the metavers?

That said, what are the skills to develop to work in these future immersive worlds? Which training must be followed? Which tools do you need to master? “Based on the already sought-after professions, which I mentioned earlier, we can in particular mention computer music software, mastery of languages specific to the blockchain, programmatic development and interface design in 2D/3D with Unity or Unreal Engine. But the professions of the metaverse are also a huge ecosystem, with new professions associated with sectors disrupted by this new tool. We will find opportunities such as: XR Developer, Financial or Blockchain Consultant, Data Architect, 3D Graphic Designer, Meta Designer, AI Engineer and many more…”, details the Director General of the Digital College.

AR/VR architects, designers and graphic designers

Of course, the first professions we think of are those that stem directly from digital and video games as we know them today. Like the Web/UX/UI designers who create the sites Internet users go to, professionals will design the spaces and experiences accessible in the immersive environments of the metaverse.

Many professions related to video games will also be engaged: game designers, programmers, 3D modellers or even experts in artificial intelligence, to generate artificially large universes, or even to reproduce artificial characters, virtual influencers or even avatars of stars thanks to to morph.

Developers specializing in AR/VR/XR will collaborate with architects and designers responsible for reproducing or inventing the buildings and objects that will animate these immersive environments, while new professions such as those of “digital fashion designer”, responsible for creating the clothes and fashion accessories that the users’ avatars will wear. On social networks, virtual fashion is already central to the offer of companies such as DressX, Replicant or Tribute.

Blockchain and NFT specialists

One of the challenges of the metaverse is to be able to find his avatar, his clothes and all his belongings from one platform to another. Many rely on blockchain technology to enable this interoperability, and more specifically “ownership certificates” what are NFTs, which establish the concept of digital scarcity and take the form of unique inscriptions attached to the? “wallet” from their owner, which also acts as a unique identifier to access the various platforms.

More generally, it is cryptocurrencies that allow to transfer value, or even reward users for their actions on the platforms, especially in the context of concepts ” play to earn ” True “ learn to earn The metaverse should therefore lead to the development of professions specializing in cryptography, but also the development of blockchain and “ smart contracts “, tamper-resistant programs that run automatically when the conditions on the blockchain are met. These are mainly used to manage decentralized financing applications, but also make it possible to create time capsules, loyalty programs, wills, etc., for example.

Will all professions eventually get a 3.0 version?

Once the metaverse is installed and users browsed, it is necessary to hire people to sell NFTs, create traffic in virtual stores, answer customer questions, animate communities on Discord and host virtual events, brand environments to ensure “brand safe”, collect and analyze user data, insure their assets against hacks, offer them loans or ways to grow them “meta-heritage”or manage their estate and protect their rights.

The classic professions of commerce, marketing and customer relations, as well as professionals in project management, events, cybersecurity, finance and accounting, or even the law will appeal and will be able to practice professions as innovative and varied as “smart contract lawyer”, a lawyer specialized in blockchain, “digital asset executor” an executor, or metaverse event director. But in the metaverse, some professions can be very far from their 1 or 2.0 equivalent: an asset manager there, for example, could grow the wealth of its clients by playing games” play to earn » or by renting these assets to other users!

An essential question remains: what level of compensation can these metaverse specialists claim? “Lhas diversity of Web3 transactions is such that the payment ranges are huge. In the beginning, profiles with skills related to the metaverse will be demanded by many companies and their salary will explode, as was the case with the digitization of our society, until finally it is balanced at a quite high average exceeding the median salary . For example, a young XR developer can receive $36,000 in annual salary in the context favorable to this new technology, while the most experienced can go up to $70,000 a year for major digital transformation issues., explains Ridouan Abagri, convinced that the need for skills will increase in the coming years. This is what drives a player like Digital College to launch a new special offering, Metaverse College, starting next school year.
