According to specialists, Tunisia has every chance to become a major player in the metaverse. To meet the challenge and position themselves in this mega-project that will revolutionize the Internet, the actors of the creative economy must unite to create an ecosystem that will allow them to develop their projects and find financing.
The cultural and creative industries are by no means immune to the winds of change that were brewing with the arrival of the metaverse. On the contrary, it is an essential component that continues to generate a lot of ink. Recognizing the magnitude of a revolution just around the corner, creative economy players are showing their aptitude to be part of an unprecedented transformation and to land in a new world where everyone can unleash their imagination and creativity. What is the link between the metaverse and the creative economy? How do the players in the creative economy grasp this revolution knocking on their door?
In order to find answers to these questions, the Ticdce center (Tunis International Center for Digital Cultural Economy) in collaboration with the DigiArt Living Lab Association organized a meeting under the theme “the passage to the metaverse”.
Decentralization and monetization of product content
The debate took place on Thursday 21 April in the Cité de la culture, in the presence of cultural entrepreneurs and specialists in creative technologies and the metaverse. The event was an opportunity for startups to discuss the new challenges facing young creative companies in the age of new disruptive technologies, especially in the areas of business model, financing and access to new platforms for artistic creation.
During his intervention, Mohamed Zoghlami, international consultant in strategy and development, specialist in creative industries and the metaverse in Africa, presented to young people the dynamics of the evolution of the Internet, which was a catalyst that served as the basis for the metaverse. In this context, he defined the concept of digital value, which emerged after the rise of web 3.0. It stems from the desire of internet users to take advantage of the business model of internet giants Gafam, which monopolize data and centralize the content and information produced on the web.
The philosophy of web 2.0 (which has been used for more than 20 years) is based on copying information and content, reducing their numerical value. Today, NFT technology will help monetize creative content and enable authentication and digital intellectual property. It is the tool that guarantees the numerical value. “In web 3.0, thanks to blockchain and smart contracts, we own part of the internet: everything we make is ours. And this right allows us to decide how we will investigate this value. NFTs will revolutionize web 3.0 and bring the foundation of the metaverse,” explains Zoghlami. He added that the creative economy is the essential part of the metaverse that is at the crossroads of new disruptive technologies, web 3.0, NFT, 5G, augmented reality, artificial intelligence…
Create a Tunisian ecosystem
According to the specialist, Tunisia has every chance to become a major player in the metaverse. Still, you need to know how to position yourself on this mega project. Addressing the startups in the room, Zoghlami called on young cultural entrepreneurs to unite and come together to create an ecosystem and then be able to fund and develop their projects.
For his part, Aymen Mekki, XR creative technologist, clarified that the metaverse is an extension of the real world, pointing out that the internet giants are in the process of creating their ecosystem where they will define and ensure the interoperability of access and also identity between the various digital universes of the metaverse.
Referring to the example of Omniverse, a platform that has enabled the democratization of 3D creation thanks to Open Source USD, Samia Chelbi, moderator of the debate and expert in the creative industries, emphasized the importance of acquiring new skills, especially in web development, now important assets for young creators.
